Taking A Life

Counseling Those Who Have Killed Other People

This practical skill-development seminar focuses on providing counseling skills regarding the psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of working with those who have taken a life.

Featuring, David Parke, CCE-BCC and Richard Nongard, LMFT

The problem in defense is how far you can go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without.  ~Dwight D. Eisenhower

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Every therapist will encounter a client that has killed.  Some clients may be veterans who have taken the life of an opposing solider.  Others may be drug or alcohol abusers who have killed while driving under the influence.  We may work with clients who have taken a life in self-defense or even encounter a client who has killed with malevolence.

Although the psychology of killing has been researched, there are very few training sessions that focus on the mental health professional’s role and the therapeutic methods available to address this topic.

This workshop is essential for anyone working with veterans, those in substance-abuse treatment, or those in the criminal justice system.  By attending this seminar you will learn:

  • How to identify the praxeological needs of clients who have killed.
  • Strategies for supporting those who have taken a life in the line of duty.
  • Techniques for stabilizing the family systems of those who have killed.
  • When processes of forgiveness therapy and grief resolution are beneficial and when they are contraindicated.
  • You will leave this workshop with specific skills, as well as therapeutic and spiritual processes, that you can utilize with clients who have killed other people.

This seminar is a practical training resource and is designed to provide a foundation for dealing with a topic that is often overlooked in traditional counseling.

This workshop will equip you with evidenced-based treatment protocols.  The methods will be demonstrated in the context of providing social work, counseling, and other professional services.
